In 2012 the NHS compensation bill for medical negligence claims in 41 Trusts across London was £172 million, some £470,000 of taxpayer’ money each day, compared with £166 million in 2011.
Obtained from the NHS Litigation Authority, this figure represents payouts for medical negligence including cases where patients have died due to failings by hospital staff, errors which have left patients disabled or failure to diagnose a serious illness.
Barts Health NHS Trust, South London Healthcare NHS Trust, Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust and North West London Hospitals NHS Trust had the highest compensation bills among London trusts. Barts paid the most of any trust in the country — £24.4 million. The others were in the top 10 for damages paid.
