Leamington toddler’s parents were told he might not be able to walk now it’s to infinity and beyond for Leo.

The Courier Reports:

A Leamington toddler who suffered a brain injury at birth has defied doctors by miraculously walking his way to raising £1,000 for vulnerable children.

Leo Burrell, who took his first steps on his second birthday recently, took part in a sponsored toddle at the Inside Out Nursery he goes to in Bubbenhall.

And dressed as his film hero Buzz Lightyear, the tenacious tot leapt into the lead of Barnardo’s UK’s fundraising Big Toddle chart.

Leo’s mum Carol, dad Matthew and big brother William, aged five, are all amazed at his achievements.

Carol said: “Leo suffered a traumatic brain injury at birth, which was caused by oxygen deprivation – hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

“This has led to numerous health problems and most of his first year of life was spent in and out of hospital.

“As his parents, we were given a very bleak prognosis at birth, and told to expect severe disability.

“But Leo has battled in rehabilitation therapy from birth to overcome his brain injury and to learn how to feed and walk.

“He took his first wobbly steps on his second birthday in April this year, and started to toddle in May.

“The week he started to walk, his nursery asked if he would like to take part in The Big Toddle event they were hosting and show off his new walking skills.

“He had a great time taking part in the event, dressed as Buzz Lightyear and we’re so proud of the amount of money he’s raised so far.”

Hugh Sherriffe, the director of Barnardo’s in the Midlands, paid tribute to Leo’s efforts.

Mr Sheriffe said: “It’s an amazing personal achievement and we congratulate little Leo and thank him for raising so much money that will help transform the lives of vulnerable children across the UK.

“This year Barnardo’s is encouraging under fives to dress up as astronauts, aliens, planets or stars as part of a space-themed Big Toddle but clearly, Leo is the biggest star of them all.”

Barnardo’s works with more than 200,000 children, young people and their families each year.

The charity now runs more than 800 services across the UK.

The charity believes in the potential of every child and young person, no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through.

It aims to support them, stand up for them and bring out the best in each and every child.
